sold! to the lady in the green hat

these 2 "fruit portraits" sold right b4 our opening reception last week (to the president of the pacific art league no less!) a cigar box painting was also bought. i may have sold more that evening, but i can't be sure. anyway, there is/was a lot to chose from the 24 bins of art work. for example, ally richter's small encaustics are a steal for her award winning work, & stuart givot's matted watercolors are also well priced. have a look.

bay area glass institute demos

on my way to return some library books (on Cornell, Flavin & Rothko) last night, i came across the bagi's glassblowing & torchworking demos amidst downtown san jose's winter wonderland, where i watched a glass pumpkin blown from blob to stem.

when i first heard of glass pumpkins in the bay area, i had assumed there was an artist making them, then i found out it was a local scene, talking to a couple of the artists.

but this was my 1st time to see 1 being blown. i can now say they are worth more than what they usually go for—much dangerous work goes into making them, & each 1 is unique.

abstract, not sketches

george lewandowski, of resource for art (in san francisco's design district), has been reviewing and selling some of my paintings this year. he sold one of my abstract sketches on canvas from last spring. since those studies i paint abstracts on my preferred surface: wood.

not only do the cradled wood panels look better, the flatter surface makes the painting brighter. it suits my style of painting better also. i am able to push against the surface when I need/want to, yet be able to back off for delicate touch due to its silky, flatter surface.

oh, i should also mention, that even i think i'm getting better as a painter. (better be)

so, what are these abstracts of, or about? i think where plants and land meet water; edges of ponds or rivers in the late afternoon sun.

& while these look good on the screen, this is one case where actual painting is better, as the iridescent paint moves with the light.

on ebay

i'm offering 4 cigar box paintings below on ebay this week. my cigar box paintings are not exactly the stuff of joseph cornell, which i recently viewed at sf moma, but perhaps created in the same spirit: found objects, one ephemeral (the fruit; souvenirs from my trips to local farmers' markets) immortalized on old wood cigar boxes.

george lewandowski of resource for art in the san francisco design district, sold the abstract sketch above to one of his interior designer clients recently. he was pleasantly surprised, as it is an early exploration in abstraction. please visit george (& toby, his norwich terrier) to see more of my abstract work, which i'm now painting on cradled wood panels.

—and now it's cover art!

the small landscape painting below, purple trees magenta, will be on the cover of the next pacific art league class catalog. they wanted something with a "wintry feel;" it will be more so when they reproduce it in b/w or 2-color.
