inspired by friend who was perhaps afraid, or confused, as we all are at times

so created this for $2 buck tuesday

with specific objective to do something with color, animal & still within guidelines of "wittzle"

& it was purchased! woman who bought it said it reminded her of a friend of hers who was similar

Peet's provided paper & pencil!

ordered a pot of decaffeinated english breakfast, considering purchasing, wanted to give it a try

already there sitting on windowsill, partly started, with a nice little yellow pencil next to it, just begging to become something else

the tea, eeh, should have known, decaffeinated tea, even from Peet's, just does not hold up to milk as the real thing, maybe go back to the real thing

quaternary kuro kirishima

i did not set out to create 4 versions of "kuro kirishima," but i was not satisfied w/ (submitting to the melt yo' face off show) the 1st 3 i created, even though i think they r all aesthetically strong & pleasing. i'm looking @ all of them again, as eddie (flores) recently mentioned he liked the (above) piece i submitted. the other 3 r below.

black vertical writing & 750ml loosely sketched from kuro kirishima soju bottle. legibility not intent, rather forms of writing over other textural script.

okay, it's feb, so it must b warhol?

he is @the sjma from yesterday, valentine's day through sun, 31 may 2009.

he is also @the de young (w/similar dates, 2: 14 feb through sun, 17 may 2009).

& last but not least, he is @the canter (through 19 apr 2009).

so far, i've only casually checked out the 60 prints @the sjma. i'm not sure if i'm underwhelmed or it's because i grew up w/all his images/influence. in any case, i'm going back 2 c them again.

it's great that he is @3 locations... although something seems weird about premanufactured presold shows (& in 3 locations)–like the hidden body or titanic or da vinci or vivienne westwood–put in metreon or tech museum, but not a "real museum"—curate something new. i'm going anyway, & i guess they know that.

btw, above is a what the sjma lower galleries looked like in prep last week. funny thing, i thought it was an actual sculpture, like the weird leaning guy at the canter.

okay, today's the day. but not the time. so while we are all? waiting for the melt yo face off! opening at 7pm pst, here's two other non entries. this time they are from one my late night drawing sessions with kyle at donut wheel, down the street from apple hq.

that is, 1 day prior to the melt yo' face off show opening. so in that vein, here's another non entry piece (the wellington star inn menu was the other). that is, a piece that i decided not to submit to the show. i created dozens of work during the holidays b4 submitting the allowed 10. tanks for looking.

well, i'm beat. spent most of my tue helpin kyle (above, the curator of melt yo' face off), wei, maria & eddie hang ±200 pieces of art from all over the country. above is what the show looked like around 1pm pst. & below just b4 8pm pst. i must say my 10 pieces r in good company.

we had a v. special new years eve supper.

we went to the wellington star inn for their specially designed menu.

a closer look

here's the pochade box i put 2gether for this outing. acrylics, oil pastels and a quiver of pens, pencils & markers. but in a limited palette to explore small outdoor abstracts. even though i snuck in a few landscape studies... the binder clips held down the postcard size sheets.

hazards of painting en plein air

kyle & i endured sisters arguing if he was painting a dog or cat. "dog, cat, dog, cat, dog, cat" (but in mandarin). no, it's a SEAL!

another family w/1 precocious art progeny, thought kyle's yet unpainted, but nicely gessoed cardboard was a perfect substrate for him to place leaves on. he kept carefully rearranging the leaves, several in corner w/a parking garage ticket in the middle, trying an all over cover, whilst dealing w/his younger brother removing them. AND when kyle joined in and moving a leaf, he carefully put it back to where he had it. the kid had natural talent and passion. too bad it will b squashed and pushed into medical school...

then there was the eccentric who drove them all away, who asked "hey, want to see the angels i paint?" no, not really.

all of this was expected, and yet we decided to paint out among the public. we want to go back for more: figure out where it goes, to react to people—i found myself painting a bunny since the sisters were only interested in kyle's work and not my abstract explorations. but nothing prepared us for the above hazard.

that's kyle (pellet) painting on cardboard, above my pochade cigar box & contents. we are just north of tower hall @sjsu, @the southeast entrance of the mlking library. we started painting around 12:30pm pst so we have until (civil) sunset or whenever campus police decides...
